NHL Fantasy Hockey Punt Strategy Guide

Punt strategy is the most-discussed competitive topic in category-scored fantasy hockey. This guide explains what punting is, which categories are actually puntable, and how PuckCaliber's Punt Finder algorithm scores builds against your synced roster.

What is punting?

Punting is the deliberate concession of one or more scoring categories in a fantasy hockey league. By accepting you'll lose those cats, you free up draft and roster decisions to concentrate value in the categories you still compete in.

In a 12-team H2H Categories league with 10 active cats, a balanced build aims to win ~5-6 each week. A focused punt build aims to win ~7-8 of the remaining 9, by ignoring one โ€” usually a noisy or position-concentrated cat like PIM, +/-, or FOW.

Which categories are actually puntable?

Not all cats are equal. PuckCaliber uses a puntability prior โ€” a per-category weight that prevents the algorithm from recommending you concede categories that are core to winning.

TierCategoriesWhy

Sample Punt Finder output

Here's what PuckCaliber's algorithm returns for a typical 10-cat H2H league. Each build comes with a projected outcome (not a meaningless internal number), templated reasoning, and the players who concentrate the most value once the punt is applied.

T1

Punt +/-

wins ~7 of 10

projected category record

+/- is the noisiest category in hockey โ€” concede it and draft pure offense.

unlocks McDavid, MacKinnon, Pastrnak, Kucherov

benefits: Forwards

T2

Punt PIM + HIT

wins ~7 of 9

projected category record

Concede physicality โ€” your forwards become Matthews/Pastrnak, not Tkachuks.

unlocks Pastrnak, Kucherov, Hughes, Draisaitl

benefits: Forwards

T3

Punt GAA + SV%

wins ~7 of 9

projected category record

Punt goalies โ€” both ratios conceded; chase Wins and Saves via volume streaming.

unlocks Skinner, Saros, Markstrom, Hellebuyck

benefits: Goalies

T4

Punt FOW

wins ~9 of 11

projected category record

FOW only matters if your league counts it โ€” easy concede for non-C builds.

unlocks Hughes, Werenski, Tkachuk, Reinhart

benefits: Wingers, Defensemen

How to use the Punt Finder

  1. 1. Connect your Yahoo, ESPN, or Fantrax league โ€” the Finder reads your scoring categories automatically.
  2. 2. Open Rankings โ€” the Punt Finder panel is expanded by default for category leagues.
  3. 3. Tap Apply build on any card to re-rank the full table excluding those categories.
  4. 4. Pre-draft? Open the Draft Kit and use the same Finder under the "Punt Plan" tab โ€” your build flows into Mock Draft.
